He was a puzzle I wanted to put together, made up of pieces I believe he was never eager to share with anyone, let alone me.
Smiles hiding a pain no one could ever bear or even try to understand. He made an effort every time he saw me - maybe because I told him I loved it when he smiled, or maybe because he found joy in seeing me smile back at him, I could never really tell, and he was such a mystery to me.
His cape draped in the sins he committed, but couldn’t forgive, yet the gold lining of his heart shone through the cracks his past created from protecting the good from the bad.
It had been days between our “hello’s” and even more between our “you ok’s”, but the smiles between us were enough of a reminder to know the conversations that took place between the contact our eyes made were something that couldn’t be denied.
A bit of banter, a few declarations of love to you, whether one of us needed it or both, it was a connection one I felt more than I heard and one I was truly grateful for.
Whether a second or a minute, we simply cared, but it was overcrowded by the weight of responsibility and loyalty. A misfortune or fate or just one that could never be….
None of this is changing my heart nor causing any despair, just a realisation that no matter the outcome, he’ll always be my Superman.
